In collaboration with the Bodleian Libraries, the New Chaucer Society supports one or two one month (30 day) research visits by a member of the New Chaucer Society to the Special Collections of the Bodleian Library in the University of Oxford. Applications will be considered from candidates eligible for an Early Career Fellowship on any topic in the study of literature and culture in the age of Chaucer.

The award is £1,800 for an applicant based in the UK or the Republic of Ireland and £1,900 for other international applicants. The successful applicant will also be able to claim travel expenses (cheapest available option).

“Race, Gender, and the Politics of Enclosure in Early Modern Siena 

on

Abstract: In spring 1572, Siena’s military governor had two pressing issues on his plate:  getting the Jews of the city and surrounding towns into a ghetto on instructions from Tuscany’s Grand Duke Cosimo I, and enclosing the tertiary nuns of 7 hitherto open convents on instructions from Pope Pius V.  Both Jews and nuns hotly resisted these moves.  Why were authorities pushing for enclosure, how did the resistance play out, and what explains the very different outcomes in the years following?

Congratulations to Emma-Catherine Wilson, who has been awarded the 2021 M.J. Toswell Prize for her paper "Medieval Used Books, Bought, Borrowed, and Bequeathed: BL Royal MS 14 E iii and the Dispersal of the French Royal Library," presented at the CSM Medieval Mondays Conference. This prize is awarded for the best student presentation at the CSM annual meeting. Emma-Catherine is currently completing her M.A. in English at the University of Ottawa under the supervision of Professor Andrew Taylor.

The theme for this year’s CARMEN meeting highlights the North American venue, and is meant to encourage scholarly conversation on the rich history of Medieval Studies in the Western hemisphere as well as the myriad ways in which “the medieval” has been portrayed and appropriated within the art, architecture, literature, and popular culture of the Americas. Plenary lectures will be delivered by Cord Whitaker (Wellesley College) and Laura Cleaver (School of Advanced Studies, University of London).

Feedback from CSM members at Medieval Mondays this year indicated that members appreciated the opportunity to attend, and participate in, roundtables devoted to shared professional challenges that cross our various disciplines. Accordingly, the Executive Committee has decided to arrange more such presentations in online formats and to record these to host on a separate web page within the members only section of our website (https://www.canadianmedievalists.org/).

For a first effort, President Marc Cels, asked if we might record the Roundtable “Knowledge Mobilization? Medieval Studies Research, Outreach, and Teaching in Multicultural Canada” from this year’s Medieval Mondays. The various members involved have all agreed to re-create that roundtable live on a recorded Zoom meeting and also to invite anyone interested to attend and participate in the discussion, as at Medieval Mondays.

This reprise recording will take place Weds Aug. 25 at  3:30pm (EDT), 5pm (NFLD time) and 1: 30pm (MDT). If you are interested in attending, please contact Siobhain Bly Calkin at siobhain.calkin@carleton.ca for the Zoom coordinates by 5pm TUES. AUG. 24. The list of topics and speakers is below. The presentations run about 45-50 minutes in total and 30-40 minutes of time has been added on to that to allow for discussion with the audience.
